Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay quickly was captivated with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. While she was still studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. From this position she started her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
